While fishing 120 miles off the Alabama coast during a saltwater tournament on Aug. 1, Florida angler Taylor Guidry unexpectedly hooked a massive deep-sea fish in the middle of the night. After battling the fish for two hours with his father, cousin, and captain, Guidry landed the rarely seen species, which weighed in at 161.6 pounds—nearly 60 pounds heavier than Alabama’s current state record and just shy of the world record.
